Great men do not seek power, they have power thrust upon them

Back in 2019 at a Christmas Party, I met a new friend who seemed pretty important with my spiritual journey. We ended that evening talking about power. This Medium post is dedicated to him.

In the realm of any human interaction, there are inevitable power struggles. We might not know it but these discrete power interactions are present everyday. Whenever we make a decision that involves anyone but ourselves, there is already a power struggle.

There are people who claim they fear power, or people who claim they fear those in power or there are those who claim they despise power. However, from understanding the circumstances of those individuals, I don’t necessarily believe that’s what they’re claiming. Power itself is amoral, it is neutral and it is detached from “good” and “evil”. It simply exists. It is no different than the air we breath, or the water we drink from. When people make their claims, I believe there’s more to what they’re saying.

History has been filled with records of good and evil individuals, both man and woman. Just as there are abuses of power that lead to death and destruction, there also effective usages of power that lead to growth and prosperity. It all depends what they chose to do with it. Did you know that George Washington was unanimously voted to be President? Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus (Washington’s role model) was given absolute power over Rome not just once, but twice?

So when you have been thrust power, it may not be best to relinquished it to someone else. The someone else may abuse it or neglect it for their own purposes. No, if you have been given power, it would be best to take that power to lead you and everyone else around you into the growth and prosperity that so many past historical figures done so in the past.
